Personal Wedding Stories
Ben & Mel
Mel and I met on Valentine’s Day 2008. We had both been asked as singles in our Church to help out serving drinks at an Alpha Marriage course. Serving drinks is not something I’d normally do but the opportunity was there to meet some other single females so I did it. Mel and I met that night, and instantly there was a competition to see who could get rid of the most juice – I had brekky juice which was renamed ‘tropical juice’ and she had orange juice and I won comprehensively.
From there we talked some more each time we went there, and at church and social events, and eventually I plucked up the courage to ask for her number (after she’d asked for mine…) and she said no… I didn’t know her that well and I wasn’t sure whether she was mucking around or not, but soon after it became apparent she was mucking around, after a number of text messages.
Our first ‘date’ was at Preston Beach doing something we both love doing – 4wd’ing – on a cold, windy and wet day. However, that didn’t put her off, and then after a few more dates a few of us went to Margaret River for a camping trip. After some prodding and after being conveniently left alone with Mel in the landy I asked ‘So, do you want to be my Girlfriend?’ (I didn’t know how else to do it) and she said yes.
From there I started a FIFO job and after about 6 months of that I had had enough of the FIFO and we pretty much knew the path we were headed but due to circumstances it seemed like a good idea to keep the job. I talked to Mel about marriage and she said she wanted to wait for the proposal until after her best friends wedding, but I couldn’t wait that long.
After flying in on 26th March 2009 I picked up the ring, packed the landy, got a bbq and some steak and avocado (first and last time I’ll do that – it was unripe…) and rockmelon, and sandboards and we went back out to Preston beach on a much nicer day and after asking ‘Mel, do you have a sec??’ I proposed on one knee and almost fell over due to the slope of the beach. And surprisingly she did have a sec and she said yes! From there we planned our wedding, and were married on 3rd October 2009 at our Church with the reception at Leonda. After our honeymoon in Fiji I accepted a residential role in Tom Price and we have moved up here and I’m home every night with my wonderful wife.
Our wedding was very special, and was made even more so by the fun that we had in between times, which was helped greatly by Adam’s liveliness and enthusiasm. He put Mel who is normally camera shy at ease along with the other girls and we all had a ball pulling stunts and artistic shots, and he bonded well with everyone on the day.
He was always ready for the unexpected shots, and we appreciated his photo taking during the ceremony with excellent photos taken without being ‘in the way’ or noticed. We also appreciated him taking a bit of extra time to get some photos at the reception. We got a great range of photos from formal ones to me jumping out of a tree behind Mel.
He’s an awesome photographer and we would recommend him to anyone (already have!!)
